Personally, I prefer 96Khz 24-bit but hardly anyone supports it yet.

all depends.

I like gritty, dirty songs but to sample a bass at 8 bit is not always a good thing.

I mix and match on occasion but i tend to use 16-24 mostly.

Just run a sound through a filter or two to get that gritty sound.
