Full Version : Midi hangs up Med?
medsupport >>Med Sound Studio Help >>Midi hangs up Med?

Hi!

I've downloaded the 1.7 trial version of Med, and I'm evaluating it for use with midi files.

I've got a 'random hang up problem', that makes Med just 'freeze'. It seems to never recover, so I've to kill the application with the Task Manager.

Is something incompatible on my system, or maybe I should configure anything in any special way to use midi? Currently the midi plays and so. Also, I've noticed that the program 'forgets' the midi settings I set (use patchnames for instruments and patchnames file selection).

My system is a Windows XP SP1, with an onboard audio card (nvidia chipset). If more details need to be provided just ask.

Thanks in advance smile.gif

Can you list steps to reproduce when setting up the midi settings... and everything done from this point to the point it forgets.

As for the random lockup... I have not encountered this... if you can pinpoint what settings you have or what actions you have done... this will really be helpful.

Hi!

The trial has expired, but as far as I can remember the settings were the ones related to set the patch names on instruments (they were on two menu options, one was a checkbox, and another were you mark the channels and select the txt with the patch name list).

About the hang, I usually imported a midi file, and while scrolling the pattern after a while the program just freezed. It happened with every midi file I tried, but never happened at the same time or point, just after some time while editing.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the extra info... I'll try to reproduce.

Hi again!

I've registered med, so if you need more info just ask smile.gif

More details:

The notes are being played as I scroll through the patterns.

I got the following message when starting med (shows twice): 'setting MIDI settings: GM Port out of range... skipping´.

And the midi options I mentioned were:

Midi -> Midi settings -> set Instrument Name to Patch Name

Midi -> Midi patch names -> (and selecting Append, all channels, GM Standard, etc...).

Ok... this last response was better... but what I'm looking for is something like this:

1. launch med
2. select (bla)
3. click (bla)
4. Let me know if you had to restart med
5. notice settings did not take. <-- end with the kind of bug I'm to observe

The midi patches are a part of Med that I have not used (as a med user)... so please indicate what you are trying to accomplish.

I have tested some Midi files (in release) and so far have not reproduced any lock-ups... but what I can tell you is that it may take a long time to load... I was testing using some old duke nukem midi files.

You may want to send me an example midi file which locks up... and/or you may need to give more details as to what you did right before it locks up.

Hi again!

Due to not being too well and having bad sight, I tend to leave problems to James and other users on here, but I have to say that I mainly suspect it's your "on board" soundcard.

Run MED and go to the MIDI menu and select "MIDI Settings"

What do you see listed??

If it's garbage, then that's your on board soundcard causing the problem.

If I recall we do tell everyone that you need a 'quality' soundcard to use with MED and the reason was because we found that the settings offered with those "onboard" cards was pretty dismal.

On top of that, I do recall a long time ago, another user reported having that very
problem and I suggested he try buying a good soundcard and he reported back that as soon as he had fitted his new soundblaster and launched MED, all the MIDI settings were correct.

Hope you get well soon!

And for the soundcard, maybe... But I've tried it on three different computers and the results were the same (xp sp1, xp sp2 & 2000).

Also I tried other similar product and other midi-related programas, but they worked fine with no errors.

Not garbage, show the Microsoft MIDI Mapper and so. Only the midi input entry is blank as I don't have this device. But I'm not using it anyway.

Ok:

- Hang -

1. launch med
2. select File -> open
3. select midi file on the lister, and open.
4. move around the patterns with the cursor.
5. after a while... -hang- You can download the midi file here:

midi file

- Midi file load settings -

1. Select Midi -> File Load Settings
2. Mark 'don't intermix type 1 tracks'.
3. Press 'Ok'
4. Select Midi -> File Load Settings again
5. The 'don't intermix type 1 tracks' settings is not marked but it should. In fact, the tracks get mixed when loading so seems that the setting is neither activated internally (that is, seems not just a ui bug).

- Midi patch names -

1. Select Midi -> Midi patch names
2. Append new
3. Type any name
4. Mark some channels (or all)
5. Select 'GM Standard' on 'patch names'
6. Select Midi -> Midi settings
7. mark 'set instrument name to patch name'
8. load a midi file, the instruments names aren't set to patch names!
9. also, if you do exit med and launch again, the midi patch name settings are 'forgotten'. I've also tried 'settings -> saving settings' before quitting med, but doesn't work.

Hope that helps! smile.gif

Also, I've uploaded the windows 'report' on the hang, just in case it's useful for you:

zip file

Note: As I mentioned before, the program 'freezes'. I've to 'kill the app', and that report is what windows generates after killing it.

Thanks for providing the info and for the midi file. This has given me something to work with... I'll try to get in a fix as soon as I can.
