I'm trying to use the 03 portamento command to slide quickly between notes of a bassline to reduce clicking.

But however I try and enter the command (manually, generate slide etc), it doesn't seem to work for more than two successive instances, and just produces a different note to the target that I set.

Here is an example of the kind of thing I'm trying to achieve:

The values were generated with the Generate Slide... menu option. What I want is for the notes to just play normally (without clicking), but what happens is the first two play as I expect, with the rest ending up at a higher pitch than the specified target note and staying like that, with successive notes with an 03 command applied having no effect on the sound coming from the channel whatsoever; i.e. a constant note being played.

What's causing this behaviour, and how can I get it working in the way I expect?

Many thanks in advance

Hi, er, fannypad, there are two things you can try which should get the results you want.

From the example you gave, I'm not quite sure what the command in the last blue bit is there for. To achieve what you're after (smooth changes without clicking) the comand should look like this;

C-6 1000000
- - - 1000000
D-6 1030F00
- - - 1000000

I've used 'F' as an example as it's usually enough, but to make sure you could use 1F.

Also, make sure that you're not using an octave too high for the sample; if you do then the note will still sound as normal, but any effects that you apply to it can cause some strange artifacts.

You can also try a few other things to reduce clicking; make sure that the sample starts on the red line in the sample editor (I usually apply a small fade-in); try using a combination of the 'D' (volume slide) command and 'FFF' (kill note) for cutoffs; mask clicks with a hi-hat or some other rhythmical instrument!

Hope that helps,
Steve

That's done the trick brilliantly, thank you very much!

Looks like the problem was caused by me just leaving the note to loop instead of holding it...

Clicking is rarely a problem with the samples I use, but the pure sinewave bassline I'm working with at the moment clicks like mad, even when using a decay/volume slide etc command.

Might have to dig the Akai out and MIDI it up... get ready for some more frustrated posts tongue.gif

No problem, glad I could help!
